Sixth Annual Astoria School Symposium Slated for February 4th
Saturday - February 4th 2017
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Astoria, NY, November 28, 2016 -- The Sixth Annual Astoria School Symposium will take place on Saturday, February 4th, 2017 at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Gymnasium, 23-20 Newtown Avenue in Astoria. In case of inclement weather, the symposium will be rescheduled for the following Saturday, February 11th at the same location.
The symposium is an opportunity for schools and parents to share information about educational choices for Astoria children. The symposium will consist of two components: a fair and a forum. The fair will be ongoing from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. School representatives will be staffing booths and answering questions from families about their school. At the forum, parents who have undergone the admission process and representatives from the DOE will review with families the procedures for Astoria nurseries, preschools (including UPK), and kindergarten. There will also be forums on special topics, including gifted and talented and the private elementary school process.
The Astoria School Symposium began as a few moms discussing the kindergarten admission process during a playdate. These moms realized the value in sharing community gathered information and created the first symposium in 2012. The symposium has grown exponentially ever since, with around 300 parents and 40 preschools, public schools, charter schools, private schools and other education associations attending recent symposiums. The event is free to the public but registration is required at www.nyschool.org
The Sixth Annual Astoria School Symposium is organized entirely by parent volunteers and is sponsored by NYSchool.org, Brooklyn Bagel and several other local businesses.
